Subreddit Demographic Survey 2019 : The Results

Subreddit Demographic Survey 2019

1. Introduction

Once a year, this subreddit hosts a survey in order to get to know the community a little bit and in order to answer questions that are frequently asked here. Earlier this summer, a few thousand of you participated in a massive Subreddit Demographic Survey.
Unfortunately during the process of collating results we lost contact with SailorMercure, who in previous years has completed all of the data analysis from the Google form responses. We were therefore required to collate and analyse the responses from the raw data via Excel. I attach the raw data below for those who would like to review it. For 2020 we will be rebuilding the survey from scratch.
Raw Data
Multiple areas of your life were probed: general a/s/l, education, finances, religious beliefs, marital status, etc. They are separated in 10 sections:
  1. General Demographics
  2. Education Level
  3. Career and Finances
  4. Child Status
  5. Current Location
  6. Religion and Spirituality
  7. Sexual and Romantic Life
  8. Childhood and Family Life
  9. Sterilization
  10. Childfreedom

2. Methodology

Our sample is people from this subreddit who saw that we had a survey going on and were willing to complete the survey. A weekly stickied announcement was used to alert members of the community that a survey was being run.

4. Discussion

Section 1 : General Demographics

The demographics remain largely consistent with the 2018 survey. 85% of the participants are under 35, compared with 87.5% of the subreddit in the 2018 survey. 71.54% of the subreddit identify as female, compared with 70.4% in the 2018 survey. This is in contrast to the overall membership of Reddit, estimated at 74% male according to Reddit's Wikipedia page [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reddit#Users_and_moderators]. There was a marked drop in the ratio of members who identify as heterosexual, from 67.7% in the 2018 survey to 54.89% in the 2019 survey. Ethnicity wise, 77% of members identified as primarily Caucasian, a slight drop from the 2018 survey, where 79.6% of members identified as primarily Caucasian.
Further research may be useful to explore the unusually high female membership of /childfree and the potential reasons for this. It is possible that the results are skewed towards those more inclined to complete a survey.
In the 2018 survey the userbase identified the following missing ethicities:
This has been rectified in the current 2019 survey.

Section 2 : Education level

As it did in the 2018 survey, this section highlights the stereotype of childfree people as being well educated. 4% of participants did not complete high school, which is a slight increase from the 2018 survey, where 3.1% of participants did not graduate high school. This could potentially be explained by the slightly higher percentage of participants under 18. 5.6% of participants were under 18 at the time of the 2018 survey, and 8.2% of participants were under 18 at the time of the 2019 survey.
At the 2019 survey, the highest percentage of responses under the: What is your degree/major? question fell under "I don't have a degree or a major" (16.9%) and "other" (9.71%). However, of the participants who were able to select a degree and/or major, the most popular responses were:
Response Participants # Percentage
Health Sciences 498 8.33%
Engineering 455 7.61%
Information and Communication Technologies 428 7.16%
Arts and Music 403 6.74%
Social Sciences 361 6.04%
Compared to the 2018 survey, health sciences have overtaken engineering, however the top 5 majors remain the same. There is significant diversity in the subreddit with regards to chosen degree/major.

Section 3 : Career and Finances

The highest percentage of participants (17.7%) listed themselves as a student. However, of those currently working, significant diversity in chosen field of employment was noted. This is consistent with the 2018 survey. The highest percentage of people working in one of the fields listed remains in Healthcare and Social Services. This is slightly down from the 2018 survey (9.9%) to 9.5%.
One of the stereotypes of the childfree is of wealth. However this is not demonstrated in the survey results. 72.4% of participants earn under $60,000 USD per annum, while 87.5% earn under $90,000 per annum. 26.2% are earning under $15,000 per annum. The results remain largely consistent with the 2018 survey. 1127 participants, or 19% chose not to disclose this information. It is possible that this may have skewed the results if a significant proportion of these people were our high income earners, but impossible to explore.
A majority of our participants work between 30 and 50 hours per week (71.2%) which is markedly increased from the 2018 survey, where 54.6% of participants worked between 30 and 50 hours per week.

Section 4 : Child Status

This section solely existed to sift the childfree from the fencesitters and the non childfree in order to get answers only from the childfree. Childfree, as it is defined in the subreddit, is "I do not have children nor want to have them in any capacity (biological, adopted, fostered, step- or other) at any point in the future." 68.5% of participants actually identify as childfree, slightly up from the 2018 survey, where 66.3% of participants identified as childfree. This is suprising in reflection of the overall reputation of the subreddit across reddit, where the subreddit is often described as an "echo chamber".

Section 5 : Current Location

The location responses are largely similar to the 2018 survey with a majority of participants living in a suburban and urban area. 86.7% of participants in the 2019 survey live in urban and suburban regions, with 87.6% of participants living in urban and suburban regions in the 2018 survey. There is likely a multifactorial reason for this, encompassing the younger, educated skew of participants and the easier access to universities and employment, and the fact that a majority of the population worldwide localises to urban centres. There may be an element of increased progressive social viewpoints and identities in urban regions, however this would need to be explored further from a sociological perspective to draw any definitive conclusions.
A majority of our participants (60.9%) live in the USA. The United Kingdom (8.1%), Canada (7.9%), Australia (3.6%) and Germany (2.2%) encompass the next 4 most popular responses. Compared to the 2018 survey, there has been a slight drop in the USA membership (64%), United Kingdom membership (7.3%) Canadian membership (8.1%), Australian membership (3.8%). There has been a slight increase in German membership, up from 1.7%. This may reflect a growing globalisation of the childfree concept.

Section 6 : Religion and Spirituality

A majority of participants were raised Christian (64.1%) however the majority are currently aetheist (55.6%) or agnostic (20.25%). This is consistent with the 2018 survey results.
A majority of participants (62.8%) rated religion as "not at all influential" to the childfree choice. This is consistent with the 2018 survey where 60.9% rated religion as "not at all influential". Despite the high percentage of participants who identify as aetheist or agnostic, this does not appear to be related to or have an impact on the childfree choice.

Section 7 : Romantic and Sexual Life

60.7% of our participants are in a relationship at the time of the survey. This is an almost identical result to the 2018 survey, where 60.6% of our participants were in a relationship. A notable proportion of our participants are listed as single and not looking (23.8%) which is consistent with the 2018 survey. Considering the frequent posts seeking dating advice as a childfree person, it is surprising that such a high proportion of the participants are not actively seeking out a relationship.
Participants that practice ethical non-monogamy are unusual (17.7%) and this result is consistent with the results of the 2018 survey. Despite the reputuation for childfree people to live an unconventional lifestyle, this finding suggests that a majority of our participants are monogamous.
84.2% of participants with partners of some kind have at least one childfree partner. This is consistent with the often irreconcilable element of one party desiring children and the other wishing to abstain from having children.

Section 8 : Childhood and Family Life

Overall, the participants skew towards a happier childhood.

Section 9 : Sterilization

While just under half of our participants wish to be sterilised, 46.3%, only 11.7% have been successful in achieving sterilisation. This is likely due to overarching resistance from the medical profession however other factors such as the logistical elements of surgery and the cost may also contribute. This is also a decrease from the percentage of participants sterilised in the 2018 survey (14.8%). 31.1% of participants do not wish to be or need to be sterilised suggesting a partial element of satisfaction from temporary birth control methods or non-necessity from no sexual activity.
Of the participants who did achieve sterilisation, a majority began the search between 19 and 29, with the highest proportion being in the 25-29 age group (33.2%) This is a drop from the 2018 survey where 37.9% of people who started the search were between 25-29.
The majority of participants who sought out and were successful at achieving sterilisation, were again in the 25-29 age group (37.8%). This is consistent with the 2018 survey results.
Over half of the participants who were sterilised had the procedure completed in less than 3 months (58.5%). This is a decline from the number of participants who achieved sterilisation in 3 months in the 2018 survey (68%). The proportion of participants who have had one or more doctors refuse to perform the procedure has stayed consistent between the two surveys.

Section 10 : Childfreedom

The main reasons for people chosing the childfree lifestyle are a lack of interest towards parenthood and an aversion towards children. Of the people surveyed 63.8% are pet owners, suggesting that this lack of interest towards parenthood does not necessarily mean a lack of interest in all forms of caretaking. The community skews towards a dislike of children overall which correlates well with the 81.4% of users choosing "no, I do not have, did not use to have and will not have a job that makes me heavily interact with children on a daily basis" in answer to, "do you have a job that heavily makes you interact with children on a daily basis?".
A vast majority of the subreddit identifes as pro-choice (94.5%). This is likely due to a high level of concern about bodily autonomy and forced parenthood. However only 70% support financial abortion for the non-pregnant person in a relationship to sever all financial and parental ties with a child.
45.9% identify as feminist, however many users prefer to identify with egalitarianism or are unsure. Only 8% firmly do not identify as a feminist.
Most of our users realised that did not want children young. 60% of participants knew they did not want children by the age of 18, with 96% of users realising this by age 30. This correlates well with the age distribution of participants. Despite this early realisation of our childfree stance, 80.4% of participants have been "bingoed" at some stage in their lives. Only 13% of participants are opposed to parents making posts on this subreddit.
Bonus section: The Subreddit
In light of the "State of the Subreddit" survey from 2018, some of the questions from this survey were added to the current Subreddit Survey 2019.
By and large our participants were lurkers (66.17%). Our participants were divided on their favourite flairs with 33.34% selecting "I have no favourite". The next most favourite flair was "Rant", at 20.47%. Our participants were similarly divided on their least favourite flair, with 64.46% selecting "I have no least favourite". Potentially concerningly were the 42.01% of participants who selected "I have never participated on this sub", suggesting a disparity between members who contributed to this survey and members who actually participate in the subreddit. To further address this, next year's survey will clarify the "never participated" option by specifying that "never participated" means "never up/downvoting, reading posts or commenting" in addition to never posting.
A small minority of the survey participants (6.18%) selected "yes" to allowing polite, well meaning lectures. An even smaller minority (2.76%) selected "yes" to allowing angry, trolling lectures. In response to this lectures remain not tolerated, and removed on sight or on report.
Almost half of our users (49.95%) support the use of terms such as breeder, mombie/moo, daddict/duh on the subreddit, with a further 22.52% supporting use of these terms in context of bad parents only. In response to this use of the above and similar terms to describe parents remains permitted on ths subreddit.
55.3% of users support the use of terms to describe children such as crotchfruit on the subreddit, with a further 17.42% of users supporting the use of this and similar terms in context of bad children only. In response to this use of the above and similar terms to describe children remains permitted on ths subreddit.
56.03% of participants support allowing parents to post, with a further 28.77% supporting parent posts dependent on context. In response to this, parent posts will continue to be allowed on the subreddit. Furthermore 66.19% of participants support parents and non childfree making "I need your advice" posts, with a further 21.37% supporting these dependent on context. In light of these results we have decided to implement a new "regret" flair to better sort out parents from fencesitters, which will be trialed until the next subreddit survey due to concern from some of our members. 64.92% of participants support parents making "I support you guys" posts. Therefore, these will continue to be allowed.
71.03% of participants support under 18's who are childfree participating in the subreddit. Therefore we will continue to allow under 18's that stay within the overall Reddit age requirement.
We asked participants their opinion on moving Rants and Brants to a stickied weekly thread. Slightly less than half (49.73%) selected leaving them as they are in their own posts. In light of the fact that Rants are one of the participant's favourite flairs, we will leave them as they are.
There was divide among participants as to whether "newbie" questions should be removed. An even spread was noted among participants who selected remove and those who selected to leave them as is. We have therefore decided to leave them as is.

5. Conclusion

Thank you to our participants who contributed to the survey. To whoever commented, "Do I get a donut?", no you do not, but you get our appreciation for pushing through all of the questions!
Overall there have been few significant changes in the community from 2018.

Thank you also for all of your patience!

Quick Note on Income & Expenses: I am married, switched jobs about a month ago, and my spouse is transitioning to a new job (at a new company) in the next few weeks. We are moving to a more jointly-allocated model, as our incomes will be now more equal (excluding bonuses). This diary is based on our current situation, which is more individualized (I pay some bills, SO pays others) with a split of joint discretionary expenses. Maybe I’ll do another MD once we’re fully on the new system.

Day One

7:30 a.m. — This week starts with a chiropractor appointment for some chronic back issues. I wake up, quickly get myself together, and get ready to head out.
8:00 a.m. — After realizing the subway will take almost an hour to get there (shout out to train delays and long walks), I order a shared Lyft. $16.21
8:30 a.m. — Turns out my options were either be quite a bit early or be late. I pop in somewhere nearby for a cold brew to wake up and kill a few minutes. $5.10
9:30 a.m. — I finish at the chiropractor and pay. This is my first visit, so it’s a bit more than the normal cost. Out of network seems to be pretty common for specialists in NYC, so I’m used to the “pay and get reimbursed” model. $149
9:45 a.m. — I decide to work from home for the rest of the day and don’t have much on my plate, so I hop the subway back. $2.75
10:30 a.m. — I exit the subway and walk the 10 blocks or so back to my apartment. On the way, I stop at the grocery store for a gallon jug of water (post-treatment hydration motivation), some kombucha, and a Mexican Coca-Cola (treats). $6.24
1:30 p.m. — I’ve been using intermittent fasting to help my snacking habits, so I take a work break and end my fast with some grilled chicken salad I meal prepped previously. I enjoy the soda I bought earlier with lunch and get back to work.
5:15 p.m. — I finish my work a little early and decide to watch a couple of episodes of The Good Fight. I pay for the modest subscription to CBS All Access (which is on sale), which I set a reminder to cancel within the next month. It works out to be cheaper than renting an episode or a season from Amazon. $2.99
7:00 p.m. — My SO gets home and we discuss dinner. I decide I’m not especially hungry, so I make some quick scrambled egg whites with a Laughing Cow wedge and some frozen veggies.
8:00 p.m. — I freshen up and head out to my weekly therapy appointment, which requires a subway ride. $2.75
9:45 p.m. — I finish my appointment and start to make the journey home. The office bills my insurance and invoices me after processing, so I don’t have any payments this week. I usually walk a few blocks longer to the express stop because of nightly service changes (and also it clears my head). I reach the subway and hop on the train. $2.75
11:00 p.m. — After a few train delays and service switches, I finally get back to Brooklyn. I finish my podcast episode as I get ready to head to bed.
Daily Total: $187.79

Day Two

8 a.m. — I wake up and get ready for work. Breakfast is the meal I typically skip, so it’ll be coffee when I get into the office.
9 a.m. — I grab all of my stuff and head out the door. I hop on the subway and head into the office. I pay per ride because with how often I work remotely, the unlimited card is not worth it. $2.75
9:45 a.m. — My commute in is quick today, and I stop at the office kitchen to pour myself some iced coffee and put away my packed food. I brought another grilled chicken salad and some cottage cheese with frozen strawberries.
11:45 a.m. — I take a walk with a friend while he grabs salad at Sweetgreen. We catch up on office gossip as we move around the neighborhood. I eat my salad at my desk when we get back.
1 p.m. — It’s a light day of work, so I do some administrative tasks. I have a motorcycle permit with pipe dreams of owning a Vespa someday, so I decide that learning to ride on the street with an electric scooter is a good place to start. I end up signing up for a Revel account (local scooter-share) and book a free starter lesson. $20.69
3 p.m. — I eat my cottage cheese at my desk and grab a seltzer - the free snacks at work are a godsend. While I’m snacking I pay our gas bill. $20.93
5:45 p.m. — I take advantage of the light week and head out a bit early to meet an old colleague for catch-up drinks. I grab a Clif bar from the office pantry and hop on the subway. $2.75
8:15 p.m. — After a few beers, we realize we unwittingly ended up at trivia night and decide to stick around to play. This is going to be a longer night than I expected, but here we are.
11:00pm: We go to settle up, and my friend graciously covers the tab as a thank you for some advice I gave. I hazily wandered to McDonald’s for some chicken nuggets and fries and got a Lyft the rest of the way home, where I promptly pass out. $7.28 for food + $3.15 for the cab
Daily Total: $57.55

Day Three

4 a.m. — I wake up feeling the full weight of my choices. After realizing what time it is, I head to the kitchen, mix up some seltzer and a Nuun tablet, and use it to chase a Dramamine. I then try to fall back asleep with moderate success.
9 a.m. — I had already planned to work from home today, so I squint at my phone and check my emails in bed. What I planned to get done is still in a holding pattern with some folks who need to provide feedback, so I get yet another easy day.
1 p.m. — After fielding some questions and editing a few documents, I decide to eat some lunch. Luckily I have some food in the house (and am not particularly hungry), so I nosh on some fruit and yogurt.
6 p.m. — I decide I’m up for civilization and pay my friend for tonight’s sound bath. She has been hosting them on her rooftop as part of her expanding restorative yoga practice, and I find it’s a really nice way to relax. $25
6:50 p.m. — I head out the door for the sound bath. It’s about 30 minutes away on foot, and thankfully it’s cooled down enough to take a long walk.
9:00 p.m. — Feeling refreshed and decidedly more human, I walk back home. My body decides now is a great time to be hungry, so I stop at (a different) McDonald’s for some more chicken nuggets and a strawberry sundae. I try not to make this a regular occurrence, but here we are. $7.28
10:30 p.m. — While winding down before bed, I realize my investment withdrawal hit my account today. I use a spare change app, so it’s a minor amount. $6.57
Daily Total: $38.85

Day Four

9 a.m. — Another day, another subway ride to the office. $2.75
2 p.m. — After surviving a morning of meetings and wavering for an hour about what I wanted for lunch, I decided on a Chipotle salad bowl from my favorite macro cheat sheet. I try to bring my lunch, butMy deskmate then offered me some LeVain cookie before he sent it off to the masses (score!). $9.74
6:30 p.m. — My office friends have a standing happy hour on Thursdays, and after some Slack negotiations we decide on a more low-key evening. I stay for two beers before heading home. $10.71 for drinks + $2.75 for the subway
8 p.m. — The heat is really killing my appetite this week, so I have another dinner of egg whites + laughing cow and seasoning. After cleaning up I have a Trader Joe’s frozen lemon bar for dessert. Between the weather, my period, and general life choices I’ve been feeling tired so I decide to hang in tonight, watching tv and doing laundry. My SO and I are on somewhat of conflicting schedules this week, so he’s out with friends while I have some time alone.
10:45 p.m. — I check my Mint before bed and notice that a Kickstarter I backed a while ago has been funded. In retrospect I probably shouldn’t have spent the money, but here we are. My spending habits, much like my eating habits, took a nosedive while I was burning out hard at my old job. I go to bed knowing I’m going in a better direction. $199
Daily Total: $224.95

Day Five

9 a.m. — I planned to work from home today, so I stretch and fire up my computer. My SO is officially on funemployment while he transitions to his new job, so he takes a walk to grab some groceries and some coffee from Blue Bottle. I’ve been curious about the coffee tonics I’ve been hearing so much about, so I request one. $13.50 for my share or groceries + $5 for a coffee tonic
5:45 p.m. — I have a productive day, both at home and with work. My friend has been asking to come check out my neighborhood (she lives in NJ), so I meet her for a glass of wine. She treats, and we stop at the grocery store on the way back to get some cheeses, meats, and breads for our dinner at my place. $29
10:30 p.m. — After a few hours of singing show tunes and planning aspirational field trips (we’re obviously very cool), my friend heads back to NJ and I head to bed. It’s been a much more active week than usual!
Daily Total: $47.50

Day Six

9:30 a.m. — I slept like a rock, and wake up to find some breakfast tacos and iced coffee, courtesy of my SO. We tend to split the cost for these adventures, which is fine by me because I am fed and caffeinated. $5
11 a.m. — SO and I spend the morning reading and catching up after a busy week. We decide to get a few to-dos accomplished before he leaves for an in-town bachelor party.
3 p.m. — SO leaves and I have the house to myself. I keep doing laundry and relax with old episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It’s a super hot day, so being inside is perfectly okay.
9 p.m. — I find myself quite tired despite having a pretty sedentary day and head to bed early.
Daily Total: $5

Day Seven

8:30 a.m. — I’m up fairly early and remember that we blocked today off as a beach day!
10:45 a.m. — We get a slow start to the day, heading down to the local hardware store to procure a beach umbrella. The sun has been aggressive lately and we don’t have the desire to bring our tent. We snag an umbrella, as well as some miscellaneous cleaning products. Naturally, we stop for a coffee on the way back to the apartment. We’re generally more diligent about making iced coffee at home, but for some reason we’ve been missing the mark this week. $5 for coffee + $27.08 for my share of the hardware store order
12:45 p.m. — After a few more errands at home, getting ready, and eating some quick lunch, we head to the beach! Luckily we live near a subway to Coney Island (and it’s running without issues!), so we hop on. $2.75
1:30 p.m. — We made it! Finally! I have been so pumped for a beach day since meeting some friends in Atlantic City last month. We get set up and crack open two of the seltzers we packed for the trip. Ahh, sun and sand.
4:30 p.m. — We run out of provisions and decide to move ourselves indoors. We head to the Coney Island Brewery, which I’ve long been planning to visit. I am a homebrewer and my SO is studying to be a beer competition judge, so visiting breweries is one of our hobbies. We have flights and buy some swag. $43.50
6:30 p.m. — We both decide we’re craving burgers, and without a grill the best option is to head somewhere in the neighborhood. We choose a place and get on the subway home, but not before stopping for cotton candy (which I’ve been craving since we saw the Philharmonic in the park). I save it to enjoy for dessert. $2.75 for the subway + $3.25 for cotton candy
7:15 p.m. — We get to our dinner spot and order some burgers. We splurge on a shared side order of tots - worth it. $30.92
8:15 p.m. — We get home, shower, and decide to unwind for a bit before calling it a night.
9:30 p.m. — I have an early morning chiropractor appointment on Monday, so I turn in early. SO stays up to plot his funemployment week.

BJP Government Performance Analysis: Administration & Governance

This is my 2nd article in the series of articles which analyse the work of Modi government starting from 2014 till present date. This one is about administration and governance. Unlike the first one on defence, it is not that binary and there are quite a few gray areas and is subject to opinions as much it is to facts. For example, I like how NGOs have been brought under tougher checks and a lot of such organisations have been forced to shut shop. But quite a few people view it as unfair.

Reddit Link
Additionally, there is an overlap between governance issues and various others like economy, foreign policy etc. In this article, focus will will be on the work done or changes in way of working of central government ministries and departments. Some of these will be mentioned in next article which will be about economy issues.
1. Steps for leaner, responsive and more efficient government.
This is the most obvious, yet hardest things to do for any regime. All the decisions made by the politically elected government are implemented by officials who usually see multiple such governments come and go through their service. It is next to impossible to fire or even penalise them for even gross incompetence. Any reform in their way of working is extremely hard and takes years of sustained effort. Political and ideological differences even among ministers also play their part. Then there are politicians who have a mutually beneficial nexus with such officials even when they are out of power. Some of the first steps taken by Modi regime was to break this nexus and it seems to have succeeded partially. But there is still a long way to go.
GOOD
  1. Officials working for central government have been forced to work much harder, so much so that many now view these prestigious jobs as punishment postings. Many non-performing officers have been disciplined and even sacked, a first. 1* 2* 29* 68* 112* 118* 132*
  2. Even serving ministers have been forced to adopt austerity measures. Some examples are no new vehicles, reduced travel expenses 1113 71* 125*
  3. Influence of foreign interests, corporates and their lobbyists has been severely curtailed. Many “powerful” people who had a lot of influence in various ministries and govt departments now don’t have insider knowledge or influence over decision making. 26* 63* 75*
  4. Many politicians squatting on government properties have been forced to vacate them. List of more than 1500 such squatters includes many former ministers, MLAs, MPs and many so called artists, inetellectuals who have been staying in govt allotted properties long after their time was over. Even BJP run state governments have evacuated have evacuated former CMs and MLAs. 61* 65* 104* 108* 109* 113*
  5. Business of paid for postings and transfers in many central govt departments has been severely curtailed. 7* 105*
  6. Many useless posts have been abolished and major departments downsized and streamlined. Often posts like this were used to accommodate officials in high paying post-retirement postings.4* 117*
  7. There is much greater communication between government and people. Many ministers and even PM office interact with common citizens on Twitter among other platforms. 124* 119*
  8. Options opened for direct entry of domain experts in to government departments. 133* 134* 135*
  9. Various measures taken to improve business climate like curtailment of harassment by various inspectors, passing of bankruptcy law, steps to improve ease of doing business among many others. It resulted in India making a record jump in ease of doing business index in 2017 and broke in to top 100 for first time. 3* 10* 12* 23* 46* 59* 66* 72* 154* 155* 156* 158* 159* 160*
  10. A very large number of old, archaic laws removed. Latest one under consideration (July 2018) in Supreme Court is article 377, removal of which will lead to decriminalisation of homo-sexuality. 1159 such redundant laws removed in just 2 years. 42* 163* 164* 165*
BAD
  1. Attempts to clean up bureaucracy and red tape need more will. In 4 years, there have not been many deep reforms in functioning of most govt departments, as far as corruption and delays are concerned. Then there have been some seemingly counter-productive measures like the one which makes it harder to investigate a govt servant.
  2. For most part, BJP ruled states have not shown enough initiative and willingness for reforms as was expected of them.
SCORE: 6.5/10
2.Corruption and black money.

Recovering black money was one of the major poll promises of BJP and they have made fairly good progress on some fronts while it lacks on others.. As it happened, cleanups also unearthed huge scams in bank loans in which UPA regime gave away loans to numerous people who never meant to pay those back. This has proven to be one of the biggest scams in history and many big industrialists and UPA politicians including former Finance Minister Chidambaram have been implicated. Many of them have ran away from India to escape persecution. Apart from that, even after their best efforts, all the opposition parties and their followers have been unable to find a single corruption charge against Modi regime till date.
Demonetisation, however controversial it may be, has enabled recovery of untaxed income worth thousands of crores which would have never happened except for drastic measure like this. Implementation of GST was not perfect, but it has led to streamlined taxation process with reduced leakage, This link contains list of some income tax raids done immediately after demonetisation. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vRovmVA_9x7NoyJHFLFZ7pA1Mi7gUYB6_OuGHgQA0pFLc9qQ1xTGMClqpGrudmZJ7YrBcg1n-VguZBi/pubhtml?gid=1658058173&single=true
GOOD
  1. Huge scam in banking sector in which loans worth thousands of crores were given away without proper checks under influence of UPA ministers unearthed. Number of industrialists, bank officials and politicians are implicated. Many of these industrialists are being forced to give back that money. Legal actions being taken against others, some of which have fled India and some politicians and their associates. Banks starting to show gains after sustained recovery efforts. 120* 131* 136* 137* 138* 139* 140* 141* 158*
  2. Many politicians jailed or under investigation for various corruption issues including former CMs and central ministers. 130* 142* 143* 144* 149* 150*
  3. Many dubious NGOs, many of which have shady backgrounds have been forced to shut shop or forced to reduce their operations. Among the benign ones, many of such organisations were front for money laundering and payment of lackeys. Others were foreign sponsored fronts for mass scale conversions of Indics, anti-India propaganda and terrorism. 5* 9* 21* 91* 115* 126* 127* 145*
  4. A large quantity of black money from foreign bank accounts successfully recovered. Treaties signed with Switzerland (among other countries) under which Swiss will share details of Indians owning bank accounts in Swiss banks. 103* 122* 128* 129* 146* 148*
  5. Large increase in number of people paying income tax after rules like Aadhar verification, demonetisation, GST. Huge amounts of money recovered in income tax raids. Properties of gangsters targeted. Lakhs of shell companies closed down. 101* 121* 123* 128* 129* 147* 151* 152* 153* 161*
  6. Stronger laws passed against corruption and tax evasion. Top level corruption reduces significantly. 33* 75* 93* 101* 102*
BAD
  1. Modi regime perhaps underestimated how difficult the recovery of black money from foreign accounts will be. Although a huge sum of money has been recovered, the whole process will take a lot longer and most likely will fall short of hype during election campaign.
  2. A number of bank loan defaulters managed to evade authorities and escape to foreign countries. If they had been arrested earlier, then loan recovery would have been a lot more easier and faster.
  3. Implementation of GST was not up to par. Numerous issues still exist which will take atleast a few months to be sorted out.
  4. Although I personally support demonetisation, it was not as well planned as it should have been. Very large number of people faced inconveniences for quite long time due to shortage of currency. Strangely, number of currency notes in circulation has reached back previous levels.
  5. Even if corruption at top levels has been reduced, grassroot corruption still seems to be as bad as it was earlier. Problem of citizens dealing directly with govt departments have not eased much.
SCORE: 6.5/10
The actual score would have been a 6. Extra half point is due to clean image of almost every minister and no scams yet. Opposition parties have tried their best to make up scams like the one for Rafale planes, but their attempts have been laughably stupid.
3. Programs for citizens.
Energy savings with new policies https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/energy/powehow-modi-governments-led-programme-hopes-to-emerge-as-a-win-win-from-consumer-point-of-view/articleshow/52592189.cms Reforms in electricity
This regime seems to have better reach out programs for general public which are meant to make their lives and interaction with government machinery easier and fruitful. In addition to big steps like Jan Dhan bank accounts, Mudra Yojna, free LPG for poor, there have been number of measures implemented to make government departments more responsive and approachable. Some of these points have overlap with economy and infrastructure issues, but they are mentioned here because they affect lives of citizens directly. and profoundly.. Some of these will be explained in detail in later posts.
GOOD
  1. Red tape cut across various government departments. Steps like digital locker, self-attestation of documents and a few others meant to reduce paperwork, unnecessary delays and corruption implemented. 47* 62* 66* 67* 72* 107*
  2. Jan Dhan Yojna brings banking to the poorest and enables direct transfer of funds for subsidies and other welfare programs. This is one of the best measures in quite a long time meant for direct benefit of the poor. Reduces delays and corruption. 167* 168* 169* 170* 171* 172* 173* 175*
  3. Passport issue and re-issue process made much easier and faster. 110* 166*
  4. More platforms for feedback about government departments and policies created. Emphasis on transparency in governance and grievance redressal mechanisms. 79* 124* 116* 119*
  5. Steps taken to solve some employee issues related to Provident Fund, pensions and others. Lot more reforms still needed. 6* 18*
  6. Swachh Bharat Mission despite problems is showing some results. 85% of population now has access to toilets, compared to around 40% at start of program. According to WHO, 3 lakhs deaths caused by diarrhea were averted between 2014 and 2019. A lot of public places like railway stations are much cleaner. 175 * 176* 177* 178* 179*
  7. Ujwala Yojana, a scheme meant to eradicate use of polluting fuels like wood, coal, dung for cooking proves to be a good success. 5 crore new connections allotted ahead of target. 180* 181* 182* 183*
  8. While many countries struggle with it, India implements strong net neutrality rules. 184* 185*
  9. Multiple steps taken to improve conditions for farmers. Extra impetus on reducing malnutrition and increasing availability of nutritional food to citizens through various schemes. 186, 187, 188, 189 205* 206*
  10. Excellent work so far by power ministry bringing even the remotest places in India on electricity grid. A number of villages which had remained outside the grid now have electricity. Additionally, electricity production and distribution is much better. India has a power surplus and is 3rd largest electricity producer in world. Most of issues still remaining are more often than not due to inefficient and corrupt state electricity corporations. Cheap LED bulbs help in reducing power consumption. 190, 191 192* 193* 194* 195* 196* 197* 198* 199* 200* 201* 202*
  11. Much needed push for solar power with huge new solar power plants coming up. 203* 204*
  12. Pace of road construction across the country has picked up substantially and it has been the highest till now. Many remote regions have new connectivity and existing highways in most regions have been upgraded, 207* to 232* 26 \
BAD
  1. Inspite of all the schemes and subsidies, Indian agricultural sector suffers from various issues which will need a lot more work and better implementations. There has been no obvious solution of issues arising due to small size of land holdings, mimimum support prices and bureaucratic red tape.
  2. Swach Bharat mission has been partially successful at best.
  3. Implementation of digital measures meant to reduce red tape have had limited effect till now. Many people and govt departments remain unaware and disinterested in these changes.
SCORE: 7/10
If it was just the intention of projects mentioned here, this would be a full 10. But meaningful implementation of many of these projects is hampered by numerous factors like inefficient, corrupt bureaucracy, infinitely stupid and large population as well as mediocre planning. Some of these projects are longterm and the effects will be visible only after a certain amount of time.
FINAL SCORE: 6.6/10
If compared with UPA regime, this one is miles ahead in almost everything. But this is not a good enough standard to improve upon. There have been some good efforts from top, but on ground implementation has been good in only a few. Some of the long standing issues like reforms in bureaucracy, agriculture and a few other fields which will take more than just good intent and announcement of schemes.

Two years, 127 pounds: My story of how I got fat, then lost almost half my body weight. LONG and not what you might expect.

I'm 49, F, 5'9" and two years ago today was my highest ever recorded weight - 303 lbs. Today I'm 179 lbs (give or take water weight each morning, my lowest recent weight was 177). And I have other major changes happening along the way.
Here's my story.
I was a healthy-thin teenager, active and from the time I reached my full height at age 13, until about age 17, I weighed 154 lbs. I was a four-sport athlete - competitive swimming, cross country, track and cheerleading. Not all at the same time, some years I did some, other years I did others. Cross country was only one year, but I also did PE every semester - because I loved being active. I was also thin because, frankly, my mom was a terrible cook and I had no income of my own to buy food. She was also vegetarian, and insisted on serving soy everything as a protein replacement. Soy made me sick, but she didn't believe me, because it was the 1970s/1980s, and at the time the thought was that milk was the evil problem - so she eliminated milk. I stayed thin, because I didn't eat much at home, because 1) the food just tasted bad and 2) the soy made me sick if I ate it. We were allowed to eat eggs from our chickens (since she could be sure the chickens were being treated humanely) so I pretty much lived on eggs and dry cereal.
At age 17 I started gaining weight - 15 pounds in less than a year. Nothing else changed. My mom thought I was overeating, but had no idea when or where. She assumed I was finding food elsewhere. Now I know that's when the Hashimoto's Thyroiditis kicked in, but no one thought to check my thyroid. I was young, active and healthy, not in the high risk pool for thyroid issues. However, autoimmune diseases run in the family, including my mom. Hindsight being 20/20, we should have had a clue. But no one caught on. I wasn't thrilled to be 170 lbs, but I swore to myself I would never break 200 lbs. It sounded like the end of the world.
At 18 I joined the Navy, and discovered real food. Food that actually tasted good. And even better, meat at every meal. I admit, I overdid it. Yes, you're probably thinking my mom must have been an incredibly horrid cook, and you'd be right. But also, Navy food actually is pretty decent. I discovered I love food. I adore food, the more the better! The only reason I didn't gain a whole bunch more weight was because 1) being on a cafeteria style meal program meant snacking wasn't an option, and 2) I was stationed on a large ship, essentially a tin can full of stairmasters. I probably burned 100 calories just going from my rack to the mess deck each morning, and 200 calories from my work station to the mess deck. And my job involved moving around the ship all day, every day, cleaning and inspecting drainage systems.
Then I got married, got pregnant, and soon after, got out of the Navy. At the time pregnancy was an automatic medical discharge, you had to jump through hoops to stay in. I miscarried soon after my discharge, but my husband and I decided we did want kids right away, so I got pregnant again within a few months.
That was the end of my being fit and/or thin. Now I was cooking for myself, and going to town on meats and all the junk foods I had been denied as a child. I drank only soda. I loaded sugar in everything. I still had no idea about my thyroid issues. After our son was born I weighed 198 lbs. When I passed that 200 mark during pregnancy I shrugged - I was pregnant, it was okay. But when I kept gaining weight I shrugged in defeat. It wasn't so bad, was it? Almost two years later I got pregnant again, and when our second son was born I weighed 235. After our daughter was born I weighed 265. For the next 20 years my weight slowly crawled up to 180 and stayed there. I was finally diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis in 2006 due to other symptoms, and was put on thyroid meds, but the doctors wanted to keep me at the low end of the "normal range" for thyroid blood levels.
Then in May 2016 I quit my high-stress desk job, but within two weeks my husband was in the emergency room with serious problems with his gall bladder and liver. For the next 6 weeks he had an emergency surgery and two planned surgeries, along with a second emergency room visit, which led to four days at the big hospital in the nearest big city.
We got home and my husband was recovering, but it made me more aware of my own medial issues - things I put off over and over because of a lack of time and energy due to my high-stress job. So, there I was at my appointment to get my thyroid meds checked (I had already done the bloodwork) and I stepped on the scale - and it said "303." As when I passed the 200 mark, I was both horrified and resigned. The nurse took off one pound for clothing on the official medical record, but I saw that 303 on the scale, and it was indelibly marked on my mind. My BMI was 46.
At that visit the doctor decided my meds did need to be increased, and within a week I felt better. I had more energy. I could move and do things. It was almost like someone had turned on the electricity. At a follow-up appointment 6 weeks later I weighed 195. At that same appointment I was diagnosed with Lymphodema, and was given treatment to eliminate the severe swelling of my lower legs and feet - including pressure wrappings/compression socks, and a mild diuretic.
On October 26, I weighed 280. I decided I had found that magic pills to lose weight, and I would go along with it by avoiding obvious overeating, but I wasn't going to diet or exercise either. I'd ride that train until it stopped, and be happy with whatever results may come. I had never, ever been on a diet, and I didn't plan to start. By the end of December, I weighed 272.
On Jan 3, 2017, I had an epiphany. Two of them actually.
One, I wanted breast reduction surgery. I had always been large-breasted, even as a 14-year old I wore size 11 jeans - and I was falling out of a 34DDD bra. At the height of having my kids, I was a 38II (yes, that's double i's). I wanted extreme breast reduction since after my first son was born. They were nothing but trouble, and in the way. I liked being a large breasted woman It was put off first because I planned for more children, then we either didn't have medical insurance, or didn't have the cash to pay the co-pay/deductible for such an expensive surgery.
My second epiphany was that I'm transgender, always have been, and have been suppressing it my whole life. Not the better known binary transgender (man transitioning to woman/woman transitioning to man). I am bi-gender, a non-binary transgender type known in the psychiatric community since at least the 1950s and officially recognized in the 1970s, but not talked about in the general public until the past few years. "Genderfluid" is similar but different. Since I was a teenager I experienced in turn being male/masculine and the disassociation of my body being wrong, and female/femine, loving being a fully femme woman. Sometimes one, sometimes the other. I worked hard to ignore the times when I felt like a guy trapped in a girl's body, because I had only ever heard of binary transgender folks who entirely gave up their birth sex, and I didn't want that. It made no sense as to why I felt this way, so I did my best to ignore the pain and dysphoria and decided it was "all in my head." I had no idea there was a third option out there - to have elements of both (not androgyne, which is also a thing, but switching back and forth). It wasn't until the current cultural obsession with transgender individuals happened, and the media started talking about non-binary genders, that I finally realized that what I experience is a form of transgender.
And once I understood this my male side finally came out and said "hi." Actually, it was more like an explosive escape, my masculine side fully woke up from being suppressed all those years and said "Hey baby, I'm home!" It was shocking, and I immediately got a therapist to figure out what was going on. I've been to two separate therapists, and they agree, I am transgender, of the bi-gender type - both male and female gender identities. It's not like multiple-personality disorder, I'm always the same essential "me." It's more a fluctuating inner sense of whether I'm a guy or a girl; each usually lasts about 2-3 months before switching back.
And both sides were unhappy with my breasts, for totally different reasons. I started saying I hated them and wanted them gone 25 years ago. Now I needed to get rid of these massive weights on my chest - my now conscious and open guy side hated them because they existed, my girl side hated them because after weight gain, breastfeeding, weight loss, they were now ugly deflated balloons I could just about tuck into my waistband.
So I called around for a good breast surgeon in my region. I found one, but I had to be a BMI of 34 or lower for surgery. Now I had a goal. I was already on the weight loss train, it was time to buy a ticket and make it official. I loaded a calorie tracking app on my phone (FatSecret) and started eating a modified low carb (~20%), high fat/protein diet. My TDEE is 2200, and I set my daily food intake to 1500-1800 calories. I signed up for the gym. I began working out - Zumba 3x per week, and when spring 2017 arrived, I added hiking in our nearby National Park 2 times per week, 6-8 miles per hike.
I reached the necessary surgery weight in May 2017, and spent the last year fighting insurance for coverage. I finally got my approval in June (last month), and my surgery is in 2 weeks. At the moment I'm in "girl mode." I really don't feel the presence of my masculine side very much at all, but I'm still excited for my coming breast reduction/total mastectomy.
This spring I began trail-running, and I completed my first 10K trail run (800 foot elevation gain), which I now do weekly.
I reached my current weight around January 2018, and have been fluctuating between 177 and 182, but I've also been taking measurements. I'm gaining muscle, losing fat - so the scale isn't moving. I've lost an inch off my underbust measurement, two inches from my waist, an inch off my belly, two inches from my hips.
I still plan on losing another 25-30 lbs - the visible weight still hanging on in my belly, inner thigh, and "saddlebags."
So now I'm fit as heck, getting muscle definition in my arms, legs. In January 2017 my blood pressure was 128/90 with a pulse of 88, at my latest doctor appointment my blood pressure was 94/62 and my pulse was 56. I can hike deep into our nearby National Park with little apparent effort, and take part in all kinds of really active things I loved as a kid, and am now rediscovering.
It's kinda fun when people who haven't seen me in two years barely recognize me - or don't recognize me at all! It has become a game, "do they know me?"
The downsides? I have a huge pannis - loose skin and tissue hanging from my belly to my pubic bone, too much for the skin to ever recover on its own. I have to save up $10,000 for that surgery to remove it and to repair a very large diastasis - the muscles of my abdomen split and my guts bulge out between them.
Replacing my entire wardrobe has been a challenge. I went from a size 28/XXL to a size 14/M, and after my pannis surgery, I'll probably be a size 10. I spent literally 15 years building my professional wardrobe, which included some very special pieces I absolutely loved. I cried when I donated them to a clothing closet for low income women who need interview clothes for an office job interview, or to start a new job. I've had to replace my wardrobe twice as I stepped down from one size to another. Right now my wardrobe is sparse and repetitive, but thankfully I now work from home, so it's mostly casual stuff, nothing too special.
Due to weight loss-caused telogen effluvium - my long, silky hair thinned severely, and I cut it to a short pixie cut, initially just to, but I decided I like it this way. Since my weight loss has mostly stabilized, I may grow it back someday. Or not. My guy side likes it short. My girl side thinks it's cute, too.
